Persistent data is that data which is stored on drives and disks regardless whether the device is powered on or off. Volatile data, on the other hand, will be lost when the computer loses power. This data is usually stored in the RAM and caches, and it can be very difficult to recover without the skills of a trained computer forensics expert.
